Vaginal discharge - the first signal of problem

Vaginal discharge is the easiest marker of how the reproductive system is functioning.

Most of the time, vaginal discharge is perfectly normal.
The amount, odor and color vary according to the time in your menstrual cycle.
Most women have a fair idea about their discharge.

However, if the color, smell, or consistency seems significantly unusual, especially if it accompanied by vaginal itching or burning, you could be noticing an infection. Get a check immediately.

Normal causes of abnormal discharge?
1. Antibiotic or steroid use
2. Bacterial infection of the vaginal - common who have multiple sexual partners
3. Birth control pills
4. Cervical cancer
5. Chlamydia or gonorrhea (STDs), sexually transmitted infections
6. Diabetes
7. Douches, scented soaps or lotions, bubble bath react with the vaginal skin.
8. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
9. Trichomoniasis, a parasitic infection typically contracted and caused by having unprotected sex.
10. Vaginal atrophy, the thinning and drying out of the vaginal walls during menopause
11. Yeast infections

Some of the most common discharge types I treat in my clinical practice -
1. Bloody or brown discharge - common with Irregular menstrual cycles, or in cases of cervial/endometrial cancer.
2. Cloudy or yellow discharge with pain while urinating - Sexually transmitted disease like Gonorrhea.
3. Frothy, yellow or greenish with a bad smell - Trichomoniasis infection due to unprotected and unhygienic sex.
4. Thick, white, cheesy with painful sexual intercourse - Yeast infection
5. White, gray, or yellow with fishy odor - Bacterial vaginosis

How is abnormal discharge treated?
1. consult your gynecologist
2. Antibiotics pills, creams and suppositories are given depending on the type of infection.
3. Keep the vagina clean by washing regularly with a gentle, mild soap and warm water.
4. Avoid scented soaps and feminine products or douche.
Also avoid feminine sprays and bubble baths.
5. After going to the bathroom, always wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from getting into the vagina and causing an infection.
6. Wear 100% cotton underpants, and avoid overly tight clothing.

Overcome Infertility --Cervical Causes of Infertility

Infertility is defined as inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse.
It effects over 50 millions couples world wide.

Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seeks help from professional specialist.
In this article, I will discuss the cervical causes of infertility.

What is cervix?
Cervix is lower part of the uterus.

Cervical causes of infertility?
1. Cervical damage -
Most common reason is complication due to medical abortions through surgery.
woman today are getting abortions done at very young age.
The procedure usually involved in abortion includes inserting a small suction instrument through the cervix.
Several abortions leads to damage of the cervix.
such a cervix may not open for sperm introduction leading to infertility and miscarriage.

2. Cervical stenosis
Cervical stenosis is defined as a blockage or narrowing of the cervical canal, it is caused by-
a. birth defect
b. surgery complication - like in case of abortion.

3. Cervicitis
inflammation of the cervix -
a. sexually transmitted diseases
b. forceful sex
c. bacterial/viral/fungal infections

4. Hormone problem
Lack of enough estrogen - decreases functioning of cervix.

Why get treatment?
Danger - long term cervical problem can lead to cervical cancer which can be deadly.

Treatment -
a. prevention of the same by - safe sex and genital hygiene
b. avoid multiple sexual partners.
c. getting gynaecological treatment for any form of discharge you might be suffering.

Worry = infertility

Too much stress and worry may lower the chances of getting pregnant and cause infertility

A new study by researchers of the Ohio University, USA has found that stressed women are nearly 30 percent less likely to get pregnant and twice more likely to be diagnosed as 'infertile'.
Stress was measured by measuring a specific bio-marker.

Researchers tracked 501 American women ages 18 to 40 years who were free from known fertility problems and were trying to conceive.

American experts said results of this research should encourage women who are experiencing difficulty getting pregnant to consider managing their stress using stress reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation and visiting a psychiatrist.

MY INPUTS - THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STUDY IN CONTEXT WITH INDIAN SOCIETY.
I CAN SPEAK ABOUT CITIES LIKE NAGPUR AND MUMBAI WHERE I AM PRACTISING AS A GYNECOLOGIST.
A great majority of woman who come with infertility problem talk about a great amount of emotional distress they have.
In many cases eliminating this distress has helped them conceive within weeks.
The most common stressful situations which my infertility patients talk to me, include -
1. Not marrying a person of your choice.
2. Not getting along with in-laws. (specially mother-in-law)
3. Feeling of loneliness, as husband loves but doesn't express it.
4. Financially unsatisfied
5. Problems with husband or cheating husband
6. lack of sex due to incompatibility in bed.

masturbation addiction

As a gynecologist one of the common complains many woman have is that their husbands are addicted to masturbation.
Because of this many men prefer to watch Pornography and masturbate.
This eventually decreases their sexual life, creating stress and guilt in the wife.

Though its not a direct cause of infertility, such addiction is known to decrease sexual intercourse and chances of missing the right time to conceive.

Such a problem is a mental health issue that needs help from both gynecologist and psychiatrist.

Life beyond Makeup

Nagpur is a wonderful city much quieter and greener than Mumbai.
Its also one with a relatively more peaceful life-style.

On a recent visit to Mumbai, I got the chance of meeting many people from the film industry and people working for them.

This segment of the "media" is one which lives a double life.. were reality is covered up by "heavy makeup".

Everyday I meet more and more patients in Nagpur, who are deeply influenced by these "fake onscreen lives" and land up creating health problems for themselves.

With Teenage pregnancies and teenage abortions showing an alarming rise, one of the major factors to be blamed is the open glorification of sex without any sex education.

Indian parents still find it very difficult to talk to their children about sex. They are very shy and scared to talk on that topic. But are the first to throw tantrums, anger fits and panic attacks when their young daughter gets pregnant or their son impregnates a girl from other caste/creed.

Because of this lack of sex education and extreme fear... most sexually active teenagers end up using medications or methods of contraception in a wrong way, leading to future infertility.

common teenage mistakes leading to infertility -
a. multiple abortions by quacks or unqualified doctors, destroy the uterus.
b. taking too many i-pills destroys the hormonal system
c. multiple sex partners increases the chances of sexually transmitted diseases, which cause infertility in both males/females.

The youth needs to understand the concept of responsibility.
Responsibility of self,
responsibility of body,
responsibility of mind.

Real life is not a movie. You are not a heroine or a hero.
Real life is battling and creating opportunities out of adversities.

Its time to see the truth of life.. Beyond the Make-up!!

Not able to Loose weight - find what you are doing wrong??

In my Gynaecological practice I have seen hundreds of cases of irregular menstrual cycles, too mood swings, to inability to live a proper family life due to Obesity.
While you might love eating, don't forget over-weight body is one of the prime causes for infertility and gynaecological problems.

Every 3rd girl I meet seems to be dieting, but not able to loose weight.

Here are 10 wrong things most girls and women do, because of which their dieting and exercise is of no effect and they aren't able to loose weight -

1. Skipping Breakfast
The greatest myth of all is that one will loose weight by skipping breakfast.

One of the worst things you can do to your metabolism is to skip breakfast.
By skipping breakfast, you are telling your body to store everything you eat into fat.

And by the way, don't fool yourself - a cup of coffee/tea with a buiscuit or two doesn't count as breakfast.

Have proper breakfast.

2. Not Eating Enough - Starvation
The other greatest myth is to starve yourself. After all simple mathematics says - eat less, loose more weight

WRONG!!! IDIOTIC!!!
The less you eat, the more you are commanding your body to convert all food into fat.

Eat small meals - eat at least 1,200 calories a day if you are a woman and 1,800 if you are a man.

3. Drinking Coka-cola/Pepsi or Diet coke/pepsi
1 can or bottle of Aerated drinks has enough sugar to make you sick/vomit.
All that goes into the body and is stored as fat.

Diet Coke/Pepsi is worse, they have chemicals that cause hormonal imbalance.

If you want to loose weight, completely discard aerated drinks from your diet.

4. Sitting Still
Sitting seems the favourite pass time of the entire nation.
Don't be shocked but sitting in front of the TV watching your favorite serial causes obesity.
20min into sitting your body metabolism slows down and burning of fat is decreased.

stretch those legs, get up, fetch yourself a glass of water.. Stop demanding your servants/relatives to serve you everything on the sofa.

5.Not Eating on Schedule
If you eat at different times each day, your body will not know which is the best time to burn fat.
Have a proper schedule.

6. Not Enough Sleep
Lack of sleep leads to -
a. decreased body metabolism leading to decreased fat burning
b. increased hunger and craving for fat/fried/carbohydrate rich food

get control on your sleep.
IF you are having trouble sleeping, consult your gynecologist or psychiatrist.
Stress or hormonal imbalance can destroy your sleep.

7. Sugar rush
Many of my patients have this habbit of eating sugar filled foods when they get hunger pangs.
That chocolate, sweets, nutribar, is destroying your body.

Blood Sugar level spikes cause your system to work in irregular ways. actually burning less fat.

8. Not Enough Protein
You're probably wondering which is the best food to have to boost weight loss - the answer is protein and lots of it! You should make sure there is a good protein source in every meal. E
ating protein in a meal boosts post meal calorie burn by up to 35%! Good protein choices are fish, chicken, egg, milk and nuts.

9. Dehydration
Up to 60% of our bodies are made of water, so it should be no surprise that water is important for burning fat.

I meet Many young girls who don't drink water with the fear of getting fat. Well dumb girls - dehydration causes the body to burn fewer calories.
Drink at least 2-3L of plain water.

10 Low Iron and Calcium levels.

Iron is needed to help your blood carry oxygen and therefore essential for fat burning.
If you are low in iron your fat burning will suffer.
Girls and women of all age don't get this simple logic.

Everyday when I see the blood reports of patients... single figures of Hb like 7,8,9 or 10 are alarming.

Iron is not the only big problem, its sad to see girls deficient on Calcium.

I once carried a random check up of calcium levels for 50 patients and found 40 of them to have less then normal.

How can you expect to loose weight when you body is deficient in nutrients.

BEING FAT DOESN'T MEAN YOUR BODY HAS ALL THE NUTRIENTS.. IT MEANS YOUR BODY IS LOADED WITH FAT.. AND ACTUALLY DEFICIENT IN NUTRIENTS

Male Causes of Infertility

Woman have always been blamed for infertility.
But Do you know that even men are responsible for the same.

As per some medical studies upto 40% cases of infertility are due to Male problems.

The most common causes of Male infertility are -

1. Erectile Dysfunction - inability to have a proper erection.
90% are due to untreated psychological problems for which males will never seek help of a professional psychiatrist.

2. Lack of Sex education - Performance anxiety, fear of sex, homosexuality are some of the topics which are never discussed with a male before marriage.
These account for a major reason where males are scared of performing sex.

3. Problems with the sexual organs - diabetes, hypertension, obesity, varicocele, spinal cord problems, old hurt to the genitals are all responsible for poor performing sexual organs.

4. Sperm quality and quantity -
a. Low sperm count. - man might produce enough semen, but semen might not have enough sperms.

medications, illicit drug use, alcohol use, excessive caffeine intake, smoking and testicular injury all contribute to a low sperm count.

b. Low sperm motility. - If a man’s sperm don’t move forward at a reasonable rate, you’re going to have a hard time conceiving.

c. Abnormal sperm. - When a man’s sperm aren’t developing correctly and have an abnormal shape, it will affect his fertility.

Early marriages - Destroying the future

One of the worst actions in the out-dated Indian social laws is that of "early marriages".

Most parents don't realize that getting a girl married between 18-21 yrs is actually subjecting her to a lot of emotional, physical and sexual pain.

The most common reasons given for early marriages -
1. parents say a girl is meant to be a housewife so the earlier she takes up the role the better.
2. parents who are short of cash, get their girls married as soon as possible so that the "burden" is removed.
3. parents who are in high fear - they want their girl to marry someone from their community.. but when the fear of the girl being able to find herself a boy-friend strikes them, they think marriage is the best option.
4. some parents even give social laws as explanation to them committing this sin.

THERE ARE NO ADVANTAGES TO EARLY MARRIAGE.

DISADVANTAGES TO EARLY MARRIAGE -

1. early marriage leads to early pregnancy - within 1yr most woman get pregnant.
body of a woman is not mature at 18-21. She might be in child-bearing age but she isn't mature to have a child.

2. Mind of a woman is not mature to understand the pressures and commitments of marriage.

3. sexually not prepared - girls who have never been exposed to sex before marriage, might find it very frightening and fearful to have sex at young age.
Gynaecological studies have documented how for many young woman- Seeing a male penis for the first time and accepting it in their body as part of an ritual of enjoyment is very frightening.
it leads to severe sexual pain and psychological fear.

4. parenthood - early parents are not prepared for it. They themselves have no idea of life, bringing up a child normally is imperfect.
they land up making the child highly anxious, angry or restless, which eventually hampers his/her entire life.

5. Indians have the stupid notion to call someone "mature" when he/she is married and has sex.
Early marriages are known to lead to high amount of extra-marital affairs.
hence instead of maturity it leads to immaturity.

6. High infertility chances as early marriages lead to
- high use of contraceptives without proper knowledge
- fear of having a 2nd child, for taking care of the 1st child is difficult
- fear to sex
- genital infections

MARRIAGE IS GREAT.. BUT ONLY WHEN YOU ARE PREPARED FOR IT.. NOT WHEN YOU ARE JUST DOING IT FOR A LICENCE TO HAVE SEX.

GROW UP.!!

IVF Myth - IVF leads to children with lower IQ or are abnormal

TRUTH - a couple was hesitant to undergo IVF because some old woman had told them that IVF would lead to lesser IQ children.
The truth -

1. old women who are not trained gynaecologists with Infertility expertise are just bluffing.
Just because they have seen many deliveries doesn't make them an expert on the same.
Their experience is pretty much ZERO!!!

2. IVF is a safe procedure which gives the sperm and ovum a "right environment" to meet and fertilize.
The fertilized ovum is implanted back into the uterus.
Hence its just like a normal pregnancy.

3. Test tube baby or IVF doesn't mean that the children are grown in a test tube.
They grow within the uterus as any other normal pregnancy.

4. IVF babies are very much normal and have normal IQs.

Save the Girl Child - STOP BEING BLINDED BY PUJA's and PUNDITS

Recently was checking a AnteNatal Care high risk patient, when her mother-in-law became very restless. She said -
"Madam, kya hum kaal ko aa sakte hai... aabhi pooja ka mahurat nikla ja raha hai??"

As the patient was an high-risk one, I decided to continue with my examination.

The old lady again got restless.

Nobody likes to be disturbed at work.. and imagine the irritation when someone is disturbing you, when 2 lives are at stake.

I asked her - what was the pooja for?

The old lady got all lightened up and said - "pichli 2 baar se ladki hui hai... punditji ne kaha hai, devi maa ka vraat aur pooja karne se iss bar ladka hoga".

THATS THE SAD REALITY OF INDIA.

Mantra to successful Late Pregnancy

The one common factor in Sridevi, Ashwariya Rai and Madonna is that they all conceived late in life.

A life governed by hectic work schedules, multiple sexual partners, travelling and diet restrictions is what many will call a perfect recipe for infertility.

Every day I get to counsel ladies in their 33-35yrs who are desperately seeking to become a mother.

Here are some important tips -
1. get a regular gynaecological check up.
2. Sleep well - good refreshing 8hrly sleep
3. weight control - BMI index below 24

4. Control on Alcohol - high alcohol consumption destroys your reproductive system. - limit yourself to 1 day of heavy drinking in the month.

5. Smoking - decreased or stop nicotine usage
6. Caffeine - less than 3 cups of strong coffee per day
7. Detoxification - dietary detox and exercise to detox. body of harmful chemical pollutants present in the air.

8. Control on Stress - yes, that mind is restless. That means your mind is taking excessive chemicals from your body and specially reproductive organs. Time to control that.

9. Keep a check on sexually transmitted diseases - unwanted vaginal discharges, pain/itch in the genital region, frequent fevers with lower abdominal cramps, pain while urination.
consult your gynaecologist immediately.

A HEALTHY REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM IS THE ONLY WAY TO CONCEIVING NATURALLY.
WITH A DISCIPLINE AND SELF-LOVE YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF YOUR REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM EVEN IF YOU HAVE A HECTIC LIFE-STYLE.

SRIDEVI, MADONNA AND AISHWARIYA DID IT.. SO CAN YOU.

Multiple Abortions increase your chance of Infertility.

I remember as a young medical student, I was shocked and disheartened when I first met a 16yr old girl who had approached our colleges gynaecology department for abortion.

Over the years, my sadness for this phenomenon as only increased.

Having sex is your personal choice. But with more and more youngsters experimenting with the same, the earlier are abortions being performed.

Everyday I get tens of queries whereby someone between 16-30 has got pregnant and wants to desperately terminate the unwanted pregnancy.

With increase in these "unwanted pregnancies", there is also an increase in myths.

I have met so many people, who have rather STUPID ideas regarding abortions.

Its these non-medico myths and stupid ideas that are leading to an increase in abortions and henceforth increase in over-all infertility rates of modern society.

A team of British doctors has released the results of a new study showing that women who have had even a single abortion run upto a 40 percent higher risk of having a miscarriage in their subsequent pregnancy.

This isn’t the first study to show that abortions adversely affect a woman’s fertility, but its really sad that society isn't ready to accept the data.

Impotence

Impotence or Erectile dysfunction is the persistent inability to attain or maintain an erection sufficient to complete sexual intercourse.

It is very common and affects at least one in every ten men.

Regrettably, only about 10% of sufferers actually receive treatment.
The number of men suffering erectile dysfunction increases with age.

What causes male impotency?
Most men have an occasional failure to get or keep an erection.
- It usually results from stress, tiredness, anxiety, depression, or excessive alcohol consumption.
- Other physical (or medical) causes of male impotence include:
Physical causes of erectile dysfunction include:
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Side effect of prescribed drugs
• Heavy smoking
• Neurological diseases, stroke and (rarely) a past head injury
• Alcoholism and drug abuse, and other less common causes

Motherhood is a full-time job!!!

I have seen a great rise in maternal neglect of new born.
Everyday I get patients relatives complaining about her lack of attention or concentration in taking care of the child.

Here are some reasons for the same -

1. understanding motherhood - mother-hood is a full-time job.
once a mother, you are a mother for life.
one has to understand the complexities about motherhood before she decides to go for it.

2. don't become a mother to save your relationship - if you chose to become a mother, so that your marriage can be saved then you just did the greatest mistake of all.
remember - A child puts more emotional strain on you and your relationship.
you are not able to give your husband enough time, and taking care of the child is learning process.

3. Post-partum depression - hormonal imbalance during pregnancy makes you insecure. This leads to medical depression. You need to take treatment for this.

4. Workoholic - workoholic woman have a very high need to get back to work. They are constantly thinking about the same, and neglect the child.
You need to take a 6months break after pregnancy so that the bond of love between you and your child is long lasting.

God Bless IVF - Farah Khan

In an interview given by famous bollywood director and choreographer Farah Khan, this is what she said about going through IVF -

"Giving birth to triplets at the age of forty-three is no walk in the park, but I had little choice. I got married at the young age of forty, and both my husband, Shirish, and I were keen to start a family soon.

God bless IVF because it's never too late to conceive any more. However, having said that, I have to point out that going through IVF is a gruelling procedure; maybe that's why only a woman can go through it!

The first thing I will suggest everyone is too get a good gynaecologist with excellent infertility expertise. He or she will be your guiding light in this dark process.

My doctor, put forth the pros and cons of IVF in front of me. But Shirish and I were so determined to have children that I agreed to all her terms and conditions.

Today my life is beautiful, it has meaning and I'm almost always happy.

And just like me, thousands of women remember their gynaecologists in their prayers everyday and thank that god sent angel for their little angels.

When me and Shirish started planning a family, in my wildest dream I did not think I would require any special help.
But two years passed by and I did not get pregnant. It was at a chance meeting with Haseena Jethmalani (who was pregnant with twins) at a friend's party where she gave me her doctor's number.

My advice to all women out there who are having trouble conceiving would be, Don't waste time... Consult a good gynaecologist today."

Male Health - Impotence, infertility and sterility are not the same!!!

Many times in my consultancy, the ladies mention about their male partners suffering from "sexual problem".

Since the "taboo" to talk about sex, women take some time to open up.

One of the commonest problems is the confusion between the terms “Impotence, sterility and infertility”.

Every common, non-medico seems to be jumping to label a sexual health problem with one of these 3 without actually knowing what they mean.

1. Sterility
Sterility means disability to bear a child, because there is no sperm production.
Hence the patient is unable to reproduce sexually.
In majority cases this is incurable.

2. Infertility
Infertility refers to inability to conceive after one year of trying.
Here the cause is abnormality in the reproductive system. Once that abnormality or disease is cured, the couple has a high chance of conceiving.

Infertility is curable.

3. Impotence
Impotence or Erectile dysfunction is inability to maintain a proper erection sufficient enough for a complete satisfying sexual intercourse.
Impotence is curable by visiting a sexologist or a psychiatrist.

IVF - Twins

IVF and other infertility procedures have increased the chances of having twins.

Farah Khan infact had triplets.

If you are undergoing infertility treatment, and opt for twin pregnancy, then be sure you keep the following in mind -

1. Premature birth: About 60 percent of twins are born prematurely at an average of 35 weeks.

2. Low birthweight: More than half of twins are born at less than 5 ½ pounds.
This increases their risk to health problems.

3. Cesarean section: Women who carry multiples may be more likely to need Caesarean sections.

4. Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS): About 10 percent of identical twins who share a placenta develop TTTS, which occurs when a connection between the two babies' blood vessels in the placenta causes one baby to get too much blood flow and the other too little.

5. Pre-eclampsia: Women expecting twins are more than twice as likely to develop pre-eclampsia, which is a combination of high blood pressure, protein in the urine and generalized swelling that can be dangerous for mother and baby.

6. Gestational diabetes: This pregnancy-related form of diabetes can cause the baby to grow especially large, increasing the risk of injuries to mother and baby during vaginal birth. Babies may also have breathing and other problems during the newborn period.

Twins are a wonderful blessing from God.. but be sure you are ready to take care of them - physically, emotionally and financially.

Infertility and Depression

What Is the Difference Between Depression and Regular Sadness?

It's completely normal to feel sadness when dealing with infertility. You may get hit with the blues when your period comes, when a fertility test comes back with bad news, when treatments fail, or upon diagnosis of infertility. You may also feel sadness when reminded of your fertility struggles, like when a friend throws a baby shower or your sister has her fourth child.

One difference between sadness and depression is sadness lifts after some time, while depression lingers, involves other symptoms, and interferes with your life. How serious the depression is depends on how much it affects your daily life.

Signs of depression include:
Sadness that lasts for weeks or months.
Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.
Frequent crying or tearing up.
Frequently irritated or intolerant of others around you, specifically people who you used to enjoy being around.
Lack of motivation, struggling to get work done at the office or around the home.
Difficulty sleeping, either sleeping too much or unable to sleep well (insomnia).
Difficulty with eating, either overeating or experiencing low appetite.
Struggling with experiencing pleasure in life, including a low interest in sex.
Frequent feelings of anxiety or worry.
Thoughts of dying, self-harm, or suicide. (If you're considering taking your own life, please.

If what you're dealing with seems like "just the blues," and not full blown depression, don't let that stop you from seeking help. Many things that help those with depression, like counseling, support groups, and mind-body therapies, can also help with the infertility blues.

What Causes Infertility-Related Depression?
Infertility is a stressful condition, having a strong impact on your sex life, relationship, sense of self-worth, and daily life. In the midst of testing and treatments, infertility may literally feel like it has become your entire life, as you go to and from doctor appointments. All of this stress can potentially contribute to the development of depression.

Depression is more common among the fertility challenged who have a family history of depression, who experienced depression before their fertility struggles, or those who lack a support network. Infertility frequently causes feelings of shame, which may make it more difficult to talk to friends and family about your struggles. This isolation makes depression more likely.

Some hormonal imbalances that cause infertility may also contribute to mood symptoms and vulnerability to depression. Be sure to mention to your doctors if you're experiencing any feelings of a low mood, as it may help them diagnose your infertility and manage your overall care.
Can Depression Cause Infertility?

No one definitively knows whether depression itself can cause infertility, though some studies have found a correlation between depression and increased rates of infertility. Some theorize that this may be due to an overlap in some of the hormonal issues involved in both conditions.

Also, depression may lead to lifestyle habits that can negatively impact your fertility. For example, depression often causes overeating or lack of appetite, and being overweight or underweight can cause infertility. People who are depressed are more likely to smoke or drink, which can also hurt your fertility.

Will Pregnancy Cure the Depression?
If not getting pregnant is contributing to depression, it seems logical to assume that finally achieving pregnancy will cure depression. However, this isn't always the case. In fact, those who have experienced infertility are more likely to feel depression during pregnancy and are at an increased risk for postpartum depression.

If I Never Get Pregnant, Will I Always Feel Depressed?
Not achieving pregnancy, or failing to have children through adoption or other means, does not mean you'll feel depressed the rest of your life. It is possible to find happiness in life again. However, if depression has taken hold, it's unlikely to resolve on its own.

Researchers have found that after failed IVF, certain couples were still grieving up to three years later. Counseling can help you get through the grieving process and take back your life after infertility.
How Can I Feel Better?

Some couples hesitate getting treatment for depression, thinking that antidepressants can't be taken when trying to conceive. While some antidepressants may negatively impact your fertility, not all drugs do. In fact, some studies have found that treating depression with counseling and antidepressants together increased pregnancy success.

That said, for milder depression, antidepressant medications are just one of many treatment options. Depression can also be treated with talk therapy, support groups, and mind-body therapies.

Be sure to speak to your doctor if you're experiencing depression while going through infertility. Many fertility clinics offer counseling or support groups. Your fertility doctor may also be able to adjust your fertility medications, giving ones less likely to affect mood, since fertility drugs can aggravate depression and cause mood swings.

If medication for depression is needed, your fertility doctor and psychiatrist should ideally work together to help you decide the safest and most effective treatments for your condition while you try to conceive.

Showing your Doctor down, won't take you anywhere.

I recently met a 24yr old young lady Anita (name changed) who had 3 abortions within last 6yrs.

When I asked her, don't you fear this will affect your chances of having a baby with your husband, she ignorantly said -

"Ma'am with all due respect, but it's not going to happen to me.. I am so healthy, I eat well, I sleep well, I earn very well.. there is nothing that can take away my happiness from me."

I kept silent and smiled at her ignorance, a few moments later she said -
"Ma'am, I plan to get married by 30, so if I cannot get pregnant at that time, I will have enough money, that I can consult you or any other gynaecologist in the world.. they will give me a child"

I smiled further, now trying to prove her superiority, she said -
"Ma'am if I cannot conceive, I will do what SRK and Aamir did, I will rent a womb!!"

I kept looking at her in irony, as she had no idea what she was talking about.
I would have loved to tell her about the physical and psychological pain she would have to endure. How it could even drive her towards suicide... But I just kept quiet.

As she saw that her trying to show superiority didn't affect me, it made her anxious. Her face made it so evident, she was Alice in Wonderland - With trembling voice -
"Do you think i will get pregnant??? ... Ma'am, can you give me some tips.. I promise I will adhere by them..."

I smiled and thanked her for coming.

THE INDIAN SOCIETY HATES DOCTORS... EVERYONE TRIES TO SHOW A DOCTOR DOWN.
YOU JUST WANT TO PROVE US WRONG.
YOU GET INTO AN EGO BATTLE TRYING TO SHOW US WRONG.
DOCTORS ACTUALLY DON'T CARE... THEY ARE TOO BUSY IN THEIR OWN LIFE AND THEIR OWN PROFESSION.
YOU JUST END UP HURTING YOUR OWN SELF.

A GOOD DOCTOR NEVER GIVES YOU A BAD ADVICE.
A GOOD PATIENT NEVER LETS GO OF A GOOD DOCTORS ADVICE.

Follow health and healthy living.

Déjà vu - I Have been here before!!!

Anita (name changed) is 34yrs and desperately trying to become a mother.

She called me mid afternoon. From her voice I could make out, this wasn't the first time she was calling an infertility consultant.

She was mostly monotonous during the conversation, she seemed to have lost hope. A small part of her conversation -

"Ma'am, if things will go in the positive direction, I don't mind flying half way through the country to meet you.

Don't worry ma'am, I have been living with my bags and in hotels since last 2yrs.

Everytime I speak to a doctor, I visit an infertility clinic... It all feels the same. Just like Déjà vu. I feel I have been here before.
The windows, the waiting area, everything seems familiar.
I feel like this is my home.. - I'm sorry if I sound "mad" to you!

I have been trying to conceive since 5yrs, and have visited at least 50 different infertility consultants.
I know more about medications, side-effects and procedures than probably half of the gynaecologists who advertise themselves as infertility experts.

I have got tired of blaming myself.
I have got tired of all the pundits and their fake miracles.

But still I won't mind taking that next flight and meeting you, if there is hope I will get pregnant."

INFERTILITY IS NOT A MATTER OF LAUGHTER.
INFERTILITY IS NOT CURED BY MIRACLE DOING PUNDITS/SADHUS, OR AYURVEDIC PRACTIONERS.

Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan destroy the pain of being "barren"

A few months ago Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri announced the joyous addition of Abram to their family. He was the couples first child through assisted reproductive therapy or Surrogacy.

A couple of years ago, Aamir Khan and wife Kiran had created media furore by announcing their baby Azad was born through surrogacy.

SRK and Aamir have single handedly broken the "barren" tag and provided a light in the otherwise dark tunnel of childless married life.

My professional experience has also shown a gradual change in the entire behavior and thought process of modern middle, high-middle class india.

Every week many young ladies going through fertility issues consult me. They are many a times accompanied by 50-60yr old mothers or mother-in-laws.

More and more mothers and mother-in-laws ask me the question - "if my daughter/daughter-in-law health doesn't permit her to conceive, can we start IVF and surrogacy procedures."

When I ask them are they comfortable with such procedures. Most of them reply -

"if Aamir and SRK have successfully adopted it, that means its a safe and efficient procedure. It also means that the child is completely theirs. We are ready."

In our patriarchal and orthodox society where men are still fixated on "virgin" wife's and "same cast" marriage because its "same blood".. its refreshing to see this change.

There was a time when a woman was easily labelled "barren" (Bhanj) and plagued for life... Today thanks to SRK and Aamir Khan, "barren" is becoming another stupid orthodox illusion.

Assisted reproductive techniques or IVF/Surrogacy are a marvel of modern science.
Just like the pre-2000's generation who where unfortunate to never have cell-phones to communicate and are still adjusting to it as a complete entertainment device.
Don't let old thought process prevent you from making use of the modern scientific knowledge to get your own child.

Multiple Pregnancy Failure

Multiple pregnancies failures can be emotionally draining leading to severe anxiety and depression.

Don't keep trying if your body keeps rejecting pregnancy.

Not every womb is meant to "bare the load" of pregnancy.

Know yourself... take firm decisions.

Know your partner... support her or guide her towards the right decision.

4 Lessons Aamir Khan teaches YOU about Surrogacy

While SRK was secretive about the surrogacy procedure followed for the birth of his son Abram, Aamir khan has been a powerhouse to accept the same.

Here are 4 amazing lessons he has taught everyone.

Lesson 1: Open and proud about surrogacy

IVF and surrogacy have been "taboo" words, used behind closed doors in "infertility clinics".

Infertility consultants were just like psychiatrists, no patient would give gratitude or acknowledgement in public.

Aamir Khan came forward with the news of his son being born through IVF surrogacy.
Aamir said, “Due to medical complications, we were advised to have a baby through IVF-surrogacy, and we feel very grateful to the Almighty that all has gone well. We are humbled by the greatness of god and the miracles of science."

Aamir and Kiran opened the doors of IVF for many Indian families. Couples could now explore this option openly and proudly.

Infertility is curable.. Be proud of yourself to walk the right path!

Lesson 2: Your wife’s health comes first

In India, if a woman is unable to conceive, she is looked down.

Husbands and in-laws often pressurise their wives to conceive. Baba's, pundits, rituals, ayurvedic medicines, etc are some of the non-medical pressures a lady is subjected too.. so she can conceive or deliver a male child.
All this pressure has a major effect on her health.. every years thousands of females die because of the same.

Kiran was facing a number of health complications, which did not allow her to have a baby. After multiple miscarriages, the couple went for this procedure.
Aamir says, “We are very proud of the whole thing. She had a number of miscarriages. We realised that her uterus lining is very thin for her to carry the baby for nine months. Which is why we opted for this method.”

Your wife does not have to go through the physical and emotional pain of miscarriages, if she cannot give birth naturally.
Medical science can help you conceive a baby which is biologically yours.

Lesson 3: Give respect to the surrogate mother
Surrogate mothers are not respected because they ‘sell’ their womb in exchange for money.
But what people do not realise is that through surrogacy, they not only empower themselves financially, but help someone build a new family as well.

Thanks to them, surrogacy and surrogate mothers are no longer looked down upon. Surrogates are doing a great service to a couple to build their family.
Aamir khan has been reported to been very generous in his treatment, remuneration and subsequent helping of his childs surrogate mother.

Lesson 4: It is biologically ‘your’ child, don’t be ashamed

Many couples are ashamed to admit that their baby is not conceived naturally.
But they fail to realise that a baby born through IVF surrogacy, will share both their biological characteristics.
The surrogate is only a carrier for the child.

Even Aamir Khan in his press statement said, "Biologically, the baby is ours."

Dr Firuza Parikh, who was the couple's doctor says, "Aamir and Kiran are the biological and genetic parents of the baby." Even though born through someone else’s womb, the child is biologically and genetically yours only. So, count your blessings.

Food is part of the Moment

While treating Infertility, one of the most common advices I land up giving every day is - "Kindly loose some weight".

Anita (name changed) is one of my patients battling infertility, she has been over-weight for long time.
Every time I met her, I asked her to loose some weight.

Since last one year, she and her family are contemplating for IVF. I met her after nearly 10 months, and I was shocked to see her having lost at least 15kgs of weight.

I asked her - what prompted you too loose weight... you have been avoiding it for last few year that I have known you.

She smiled and with a tear in her eye, replied -

"Doc. I always knew I was over-weight.
Forget Everyone, even I made fun of my weight.
Whenever I saw my old pre-wedding and wedding fotos, I cried and wondered is this the same me.

Every time I open my cupboard, an old dress would ask me.. will you fit into me this year.. or just give me away.

The pain would kill me every morning and every night.
I had nothing else to complain about in life.

But then just like magic, there were moments when I completely forget all that pain.

When I was with family, I was busy enjoying myself, that I forget how many scoops of ice-cream I had.

When I was with my husband, I was so busy loving him, that  2 pizzas and 1 pasta seem just perfect addition to the beautiful time spent.

When  I was alone down listening to music or reading a book, that one drink, chocolate cake or fried snacks seemed my best companion.

I gained weight because in my mind, food was just part of the moment... I never understood it was something that was killing my future moments.

I used to have a lot of guilt.. and I would run for excuses.. i would read stuff like - women gain weight because they accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies. A woman is not fat, she is greatly cultivated.

I tell you doc... every woman knows when she grows fat.. a woman is always amazing.. thin or fat..

but  a woman is not healthy when she is fat!!!"

T3, T4 and TSH - very important!!!

Patients complaint to me about the "blood tests" that doctors prescribe for them.

No one likes to pay for them, No one likes to get blood drawn from their body for the same.

Blood Tests are essential.

One of the most essential blood tests in infertility is - Thyroid levels.
or commonly known as the T3, T4, TST levels.

Your thyroid is responsible for the metabolism of every cell in your body. It converts iodine into two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). When you have low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) or high thyroid function (hyperthyroidism), it is no surprise that this imbalance can have an effect on your ovaries and your infertility.

Tips to fight infertility if you have a thyroid disorder

1. Get properly diagnosed

2. Ask your doctor about Free T3/Reverse T3 ratio

3. Talk to your doctor about different thyroid medications

4. Lose weight

6. Limit your intake of soy and cruciferous vegetables

7. Avoid toxins

8. Get adequate sleep

9. Reduce your stress

10. Get adequate exercise

Impotence OR Erectile dysfunction

Its the persistent or recurrent inability to attain or maintain an erection sufficient to complete sexual intercourse or another chosen sexual activity.

It is very common and affects at least two in every ten men.

only about 10% of sufferers actually receive treatment. 90% suffer silently.

The number of men suffering erectile dysfunction increases with age.

What causes male impotency?
Most commonly it results from stress, tiredness, anxiety, depression, or excessive alcohol consumption.

Other causes of male impotence include:
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Side effect of prescribed drugs
• Heavy smoking
• Neurological diseases, stroke and a past head injury
• Alcoholism and drug abuse

Impotence is one of the most common causes for untreated cases of Infertility in India.

Indian Men are very shy by nature. They will never talk about the problem, and even if they talk won't ever seek help.

There is a proper medical cure.
Don't go for FAKE and HARMFUL PRODUCTS sold on TV.

Seek proper help of a doctor.
